What do you think of when you hear of the Fast and Furious franchise?

Once upon a time, everybody would have immediately thought about cars. On the other hand, many would now first think of insanity, explosions, and some of the most preposterous stunts in the history of blockbuster cinema.

The series has outgrown its street-racing roots and morphed into something which feels more like Mission: Impossible pumped full of petrol.

As the films have become more ambitious, we have witnessed stars from Dwayne Johnson to Charlize Theron hop aboard for the ride. Indeed, F9 has arrived to introduce some fresh faces too and one of the most notable to leave an impression is the actor who plays Young Dom in the string of flashbacks.

As he steps into the shoes of Vin Diesel to portray the iconic character, let’s get to know Vinnie Bennett…

F9 marks the 28-year-old New Zealand actor’s first appearance in the franchise but he has been working in the wider entertainment industry since 2012.

Addressing the film’s box-office success in New Zealand, Vinnie told the Otago Daily Times: “I feel so proud to be a part of such a well-loved franchise. To know that the NZ audience has embraced Fast & Furious 9 in a big way really means a lot to me.”

Chatting with Stuff, he reflected on meeting Vin Diesel and hearing the actor’s daughters sing. It’s clear he had a great time working on the project, but he has also explained that now is the time to think very carefully about his path:

“I’m going to assume there’ll be some opportunities that might arise out of this. It’s going to be an interesting time for me, career-wise. It will be an important time to be very smart about the next projects I choose to work on, and not just opt for a big cash-grab.”

While the future is surely bright, it’s worth reflecting on the star’s past too. Where may some audiences recognise him from?
